Non-Laser Procedures

All too often, we are asked by our patients whether there are any good alternatives to the popular LASIK laser treatment. Indeed, even though there do exist a number of excellent alternatives, you are unlikely to ever hear about them. Why is that? The unfortuante truth is that, since such procedures are usually more intensive on the part of the provider, the many assembly-line, commercial LASIK providers choose to intentionally underplay these alternatives in their ads. At the 5th Avenue Eye Center, we choose to take a different approach. We evaluate our patients' on a case-by-case basis -- if we don't think LASIK surgery is right for you, we won't recommend it. If we think you'd be better off with a non-laser procedure, we will tell you as much.

Below are three of the more common non-laser procedures we administer at the Center:

Implantable Contact Lens: This procedure, which is newer than LASIK, does not involve the removal of any corneal tissue. Instead, a lens is implanted into the eyes in order to correct the visual problem. The appeal of this procedure is that, unlike LASIK, where corneal tissue is permanently removed, ICL surgery is reversible. Implantable contact lens can also correct prescriptions of a far greater range than LASIK can correct.

Clear Lensectomy (or Clear Lens Exchange): In clear lensectomy, the lens inside the eyes are replaced with an artificial lens. This is usually a good option for people who have extreme nearsightedness or extreme farsightedness.

Conductive Keratoplasty: conductive keratoplasty is a procedure by which a radio-frequency probe is used to alter the curvature of the cornea. This procedure suits the person who is slightly farsighted, and is usually performed for people over the age of 40. Conductive keratoplasty is both safe and simple. However, due to the limited range of treatment, only a minority of patients are candidates.
